About Michael L. Thompson

Mike Thompson serves as the firm’s Managing Shareholder. He practices labor and employment law throughout Alabama and the United States. Mike also advises businesses regarding strategic concerns and compliance with immigration regulations and assists businesses with obtaining employer sponsored visas for foreign workers. Mike devotes a significant portion of his time to counselling employers regarding best practices to creatively mitigate risk while remaining focused on accomplishing underlying business objectives. Mike takes pride in being described by clients as resourceful, proactive, creative and responsive.

Mike advises employers regarding compliance and best practices in all areas of employment law, including leave laws (such as military and FMLA), discrimination and harassment laws, employee benefits, policies, procedures, wage and hour, contracts and compensation issues. Mike has successfully defended single and multi-plaintiff lawsuits and arbitrations involving egregious sexual harassment, retaliatory discharge, disability, age, religion, race and sex discrimination, non-competition and trade secrets, FMLA, ERISA, invasion of privacy, negligent supervision, intentional infliction of emotional distress, fraud and breach of contract.

Mike grew up on the family farm in the Springhill community south of Troy, Alabama. He attended Samford University on a Presidential Scholarship and graduated, magna cum laude, with a degree in Public Administration.  Mike received his law degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law.  Prior to returning home to Alabama in 2000, Mike was associated with the Houston, Texas office of Haynes and Boone, LLP, an AmLaw 100 law firm, where his practice encompassed a broad range of commercial litigation matters, including the trial and defense of class actions, in both federal and state court.  He is admitted to practice before the state courts of Alabama and Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as various U.S. District Courts and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Seventh, Ninth and Eleventh Circuits.

Mike was recognized by The Birmingham Business Journal as one of the Top 40 Under Forty business leaders in metropolitan Birmingham.  He is regularly recognized by peer rating services as a preeminent legal practitioner and business partner including having maintained an AV rating from Martindale Hubbell since his initial rating, as well as being continuously listed in THOMSON REUTERS MID-SOUTH SUPER LAWYERS (including multiple years being names as a Top 50 attorney in Alabama), The Best Lawyers in America in both Employment Law – Management and Litigation – Labor and Employment, CHAMBERS AND PARTNERS, BEST LAWYERS AND LAW FIRMS among other recognized rating services.

Mike is a member of the Labor and Employment Sections of the American Bar Association and the Alabama State Bar.  He is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Society for Human Resource Management.

Mike is privileged to serve in leadership positions at his church and has previously served on various non-profit board of directors.
